There is a lot of myths in the SEO industry because SEO is not an exact science. Search engines, like Google, will never tell exactly what you should do to rank higher because doing so would lead to abuse. Instead they tell you globally what you should do and avoid doing to create useful websites that will rank appropriately in search engines.
Because nothing is really clear concerning algorithms used by search engines, many myths are spread everywhere. Let's examine them !
Having an XML sitemap will boost your rank
Not true ! What an XML sitemap does is giving to the search engine all your URLs that you want to see indexed. After that, the search engine will crawl and analyze them.
META tags will boost your rank
Not true ! META tags don't have any power today, compared to what they were many, many years ago. META Keywords does nothing and META Description only gives a description that search engines can display when showing your website in SERP (search engine result page).
It's important to update your website frequently
Not true ! Updating your website will only make the search engine index your website often. It will not increase your ranking in any way.
The more links pointing to your website you have, the more your rank will climb
Not true ! It's not the number of links that matters, it's the quality. If you have 2 links from great blog articles and 1 link from the Yahoo! Directory it will be a lot more useful than having 10,000 links from link farms and FFAs. In fact, having a lot of spammy links will make the search engine see you as a web spammer and they will remove you from their index.
SEO is a one-time activity
Not true ! SEO can be done in one-time shots, a couple of times per year or less to help your website, but it can't only be done once in the life of the website. The reason for this is that search engines are constantly evolving and things that they take into consideration for ranking websites changes over months.

There's a lot of indians that pretend to be expert of SEO because for them, money means a lot more than for us (because of the exchange rate and poverty in india). How can an indian that can't speak english helps your ranking ? SEO needs to be done by an established company you can call toll-free and that gives you all its contact informations, not a third-world person who tries to do this by night in the hope of making some bucks !
